Update on Athletics

Posted by Elizabeth Egan on October 16, 2020

We have received questions about whether we plan to begin holding athletic activities for high school and middle school students. We are currently reviewing mixed guidance from state officials and the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) as we plan our next steps.

WIAA has issued updated guidance for school sports, but that guidance contradicts the decision-making guidance issued by the Washington Department of Health (DOH) and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). The DOH and OSPI guidance clearly states that any district with COVID-19 case rates above 25 per 100,000 should strongly consider canceling all extra-curricular activities. The DOH and OSPI guidance was just re-issued today, Oct. 16.

We are reviewing and attempting to reconcile these two sets of guidance and determine what they mean for our next steps. The WIAA Executive Board has another meeting scheduled for October 20, and we may have to wait for that meeting to occur to know more. In the meantime, King County currently has COVID-19 case rates at 92 per 100,000, putting us solidly in the High COVID activity category. We continue to monitor these case rates. We thank you for your patience as we work through the nuances of these messages and recent changes made to them.
